The map_coordinates step is quite computationally intensive in the SKA usecase. It is not amenable to multiprocessing based parallelisation because the ratio of output to computation is quite high, but seems to work very well with threading.
There is some axis gymnastics (which maybe the "indexing" parameter to meshgrid could help with) which I've tried to follow, but please do check.
