I have used this function successfully here:
https://code.roche.com/PMDA/portfolio-projects/bardenas-alluvium-olink/-/blob/master/olink_plate_design.Rmd?ref_type=heads

To check:

does it work for highly imbalanced groups
what happens if initial distribution splits a group? -> i.e. invalid solution
