I've encountered the same error, but only when wrapping it with utils.promisify like so: utils.promisify(git.check).
Wrapping it with a custom promise solves the problem:

function getGitStatusPromise(repo) {
  return new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
    git.check(repo, (err, status) => {
      if (err) {
        reject(err)
      } else {
        resolve(status)
      }
    })
  })
}
