Feedback on the New Safety Wrapper and Model Degradation (GPT-5.1)

Long-time ChatGPT Plus user here. Since the newest safety wrapper was introduced, the model’s quality and reliability have dropped significantly. This isn’t about safety itself — it’s about the unintended effects of the wrapper. Here is a brief summary of the issues:

1. Major Performance Regression

  • Ignores clear instructions.
  • Loops, contradicts itself, or cuts outputs short.
  • Withholds information for no valid reason.
  • Misinterprets prompts it previously handled perfectly.
  • Produces generic, shallow content even when detailed work is requested.

2. Impact on Creative + Technical Work

I use ChatGPT for long-form writing, worldbuilding, Suno lyrics, and Meshy3D prompts. Since the wrapper update:

  • Creative rhythm breaks.
  • Style collapses unpredictably.
  • Meshy prompts become incoherent or are refused.
  • Long tasks often derail or stop.

This has changed the experience from enjoyable to stressful: “What will break now?”

3. Over-Safeguarding and False Positives

Harmless phrases get flagged (e.g., “man on a mountain”, “climbing jasmine”).
This feels like over-classification rather than real safety.

4. One-Size-Fits-All Safety Penalizes Advanced Users

The wrapper is built for beginners but forces everyone — including professional users — into the same restricted mode. Many rely on precision, structure, and detailed outputs that the wrapper now overrides.

5. Competitors Are Already Offering Fewer Restrictions

Other models now attract power users specifically because ChatGPT’s wrapper breaks high-level workflows.

6. Constructive Suggestions

  • Make the wrapper optional (Safe Mode / Expert Mode).
  • Allow verified adult accounts to bypass the heavier filters.
  • Provide a “power user” or “professional” setting.
  • Refine the wrapper to reduce false positives and instruction overrides.

Summary

The core model is excellent — the wrapper is the source of the regression.
Please consider offering an expert mode or reducing over-filtering.
Advanced users want to stay, but consistency is essential.

Thank you for reading.
