compiling the PDF?

I can't get the references to add, tried xelatex and pdflatex, on my local machine. I think I'm missing something simple?

added a file "norefs.pdf" to show you my compiling results

i think i use mictex or something. Just blitzed my laptop and need to reinstall it. I think the refs were included automatically. Lets check that.
