Add assertions on some of the recently committed test cases

Tests without assertions are not worth anything to us; let's not repeat the mistakes of simplTestCases, please add adequate assertions to these test cases.

these are moved from old code, and I will probably not working on them
until finishing the multi-downloader thing.

these are definitely items on covering bigsemantics with test cases, though.
